Microbiological contaminants of bore water pose the most immediate and serious health risks, particularly when water is consumed without treatment. E. coli and Coliform Bacteria commonly originate from faecal contamination, which can cause diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and in severe cases, kidney failure. Elevated levels of Heterotrophic Bacteria indicate system contamination which can lead to opportunistic infections. Pseudomonas aeruginosa can cause skin rashes, ear infections, respiratory issues, and serious infections in wounds. Other common Pathogens include: Campylobacter, Salmonella, Shigella, Giardia and Cryptosporidium can cause gastrointestinal illness, chronic diarrhoea and systemic infections. Chemical contaminants can cause chronic health issues. Heavy metals such as lead, arsenic & mercury can result in neurological damage, organ toxicity, developmental issues in children and cancers. High level nitrates can cause methemoglobinemia, which is commonly known as blue baby syndrome, in infants, and oxygen deprivation symptoms in adults. Pesticides or Hydrocarbons can disrupt hormones, damage organs, and increase cancer risk.
Physical and Aesthetic Contaminants while not always directly harmful, they may signal underlying problems or affect treatment effectiveness. Suspended Solids can reduce UV or chlorine effectiveness by shielding pathogens. Salinity or TDS in high levels can affect hydration and kidney function. pH Imbalance can corrode plumbing and release harmful metals into the water.
SA Health requires bore water to be tested for Microbiological and Chemical Contaminants at least once every two years or when changes in quality are observed.
