Carbon Filters or Activated Carbon Filters are used to reduce the concentration of organics & to remove oxidants such as free chlorine from reverse osmosis plant feed water.

Iron Filters are commonly used on bore water which contains soluble iron, manganese & hydrogen sulphide that oxidise in the presence of oxygen or chlorine to form insoluble hydroxides & elemental sulphur, all of which foul reverse osmosis membranes.
